For over four decades, AC/DC has reigned as one of the most beloved hard-rocking bands in the world. With guitarist Angus Young as their front man, they grew from humble beginnings in Australia to eventually become a venue-packing mega band with legions of fans worldwide. They have never relied on gimmicks or frills, and have always been a straight up rock and roll band. Back in Australia, brothers Angus and Malcolm Young had the idea for a no–nonsense rock band and chose the name AC/DC, which inferred electricity with a hint of danger. They played their first gig on New Year’s Eve in 1973 and solidified the rest of the band in 1974 when vocalist Bon Scott, drummer Phil Rudd, and bassist Mark Evans replaced earlier members Peter Clack, Rob Bailey and Dave Evans. AC/DC’s first five studio albums, High Voltage(1975), T.N.T(1975), Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap(1976), Let There Be Rock(1977) and Powerage(1978) were produced by George Young and Henry Vanda who captured the band’s raw studio energy. In 1976 the band signed a worldwide contract with Atlantic Records and their previous albums were rereleased globally. Subsequently, bassist Mark Evans left the band and was replaced with Cliff Williams before their first live album If You’ve Want Blood You’ve Got It was released at the end of 1978. Highway to Hell was released in 1979, after being recorded over a six-month period in London with producer John Robert “Mutt” Lange. AC/DC’s first European tour followed and their fame grew. Sadly, their triumphs were followed by tragedy as singer Bon Scott died of asphyxiation in February of 1980. Vowing to keep going, they found new singer Brian Johnson and released Back in Black which became an instant classic and catapulted AC/DC to bona fide rock star status. It is the sixth best-selling rock album of all time selling 19 million copies in the U.S and 41 million globally. For Those About To Rock followed which became their first Number One album in America and they released four more albums that decade.
AC/DC continues to perform to this day and have a new generation of rock and roll fans who are learning about and loving their no-frills rock attitude. They continue to give the fans what they want and have never lost touch with their roots and what they stand for.
