For thirteen years, the Arizona Diamondbacks have been close to the hearts of Arizonans far beyond the metropolitan Phoenix border. Officially established in March of 1995 but playing for the first time in 1998, the professional baseball team has had its fair share of ups and downs. Yet, through thick and thin, its fans have stayed true.
In 1993, Jerry Colangelo set out to quench a thirst for baseball in the desert. In two years, when he had accomplished his goal of creating a Major League team in the Southwest, it was operated as a subsidiary of the Phoenix Suns. However, Colangelo opted for what he hoped would be a more unifying title by dubbing the team the "Arizona Diamondbacks". With any luck, the team would pull in fans from all over the state.
Its original colors were chosen purposefully, with each holding significance in the Arizona environment. Turquoise represented the semi-precious stone found to the area while copper was a nod to the state's impressive copper production. Purple was made wildly popular by the success of the Phoenix Suns, prompting the Diamondbacks to also adopt it as one of their own. Its name refers to the Western Diamondback, a highly poisonous rattlesnake native to the region.
With several early successes, it seemed that this would be a team to beat in Major League Baseball. In 1999, 2001, and 2002, the Diamondbacks won division titles, even going on to win the World Series in 2001 with the help of one of the team's 
most famous players: Louis Gonzales.
Confusingly, the team fell from grace, finding themselves with the worst record in Major League Baseball in 2004. After several trades and changes in management, the Diamondbacks came back strong in 2007, complete with new uniforms. In the years since its revamping, the team's record has been less turbulent, if slightly unpredictable.
Though this beloved team plays in the heart of downtown Phoenix at Chase Field, they are cheered on by Arizonans all over the state.
