If you want to see a bison turn into a hawk, this is about the closest thing you are going to find. The Atlanta Hawks were formed in 1946 as the Buffalo Bisons. They then turned into the Tri-Cities Blackhawks and joined the NBA in 1949. From the Blackhawks, they transformed into the Milwaukee Hawks, the St. Louis Hawks, and then to the Atlanta Hawks in 1968. The Hawks are in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference, where they play at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Hawks have faired well with Larry Drew, their newest head coach. This is Drew's second year of head coaching in the NBA, since he was hired in June 2010. Previously, he was an assistant coach for the Hawks and had no trouble jumping right in and harnessing the Hawks' offensive power to make for a great 2010-11 season.

The 2010-11 season was great for the Hawks, they were able to snatch 44 wins and 38 loses for third place in the Southeast Division with the fifth playoff seed in the Eastern Conference. In the First Round, the Hawks beat the Orlando Magic in Game Six, but lost to the Chicago Bulls in Game Six of the Conference Semi Finals.

The home of the Hawks is the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. It opened in 1999 with a seating capacity of 19,445 people, but renovations have reduced it down to 18,729 people. In 2010, it was named by the Pollstar Magazine as the second best arena in the United States and the fifth best arena in the world.

The predecessor to the Atlanta Hawks, the St. Louis Hawks, appeared in the NBA championship four times and were only able to win one in 1958. Their other appearances were in 1957, 1960. and 1961.

The Hawks have accomplished the difficult task of retaining their status as a great team for the duration of their existence. Most importantly, they have been able to keep their fans loyal to them since they were just the young Bison in 1946.
