Boyz II Men is the R&B group originating a quarter century ago. It proved the breakthrough artist for the evolution of R&B that merged with hip hop and became pop. At times producing songs steeped in 1970s soul, at times recording material that could be described as a more mainstream friendly form of 1980s hip hop, and most often releasing a track somewhere in between, Boyz II Men tickets and albums would be among the most successful of the ‘90s. These same concert tickets have a place in the new century.
Once at the cutting edge of R&B, Boyz II Men have spent nearly a decade as a trio after having risen to incredible heights as a quartet. That original quartet included Nathan Morris, who still provides baritone and soprano. Shawn Stockman has made his name known outside of the group. He has been able to juggle touring with Boyz II Men with duties as a judge on The Sing-Off. Wanya Morris is an ambitious singer, one who has embarked on a solo career and has dated such R&B and pop icons as Brandy and Mariah Carey. Michael McCrary had been a bassist for the group but had been forced to leave after he discovered his back problems were a result of scoliosis.
As a quartet, Boyz II Men first broke out with the album Cooleyhighharmony. The album reached number one on the Billboard R&B charts, but more importantly it reached number three on the Billboard 200 charts. Such a position meant the modern form of R&B had become accepted by the mainstream. It went 9-time platinum in theUnited States. In particular, the four guys fromPhiladelphiahad success with “Motownphilly”. The single had been the first new jack swing track released by any group to attain such acclaim. “End of the Road” took the next step and became a number one hit throughout the world. II proved a rare follow up to the first, exceeding the sales numbers and releasing three certified singles. “I’ll Make Love to You” followed the times and became a hit love song that lives on to this day. “On Bended Knee” followed suit and introduced another love song to the repertoire.
As the times wore on, hip hop moved onto a general collaboration with rap, but Boyz II Men’s effect could not be ignored. The guys recharged a call for wholesome boy bands, a charge that has extended well beyond the end of the ‘90s and well into the 21st century. The legacy of the group lives on with contemporary Boyz II Men tickets and the success of groups like Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, and New Direction.
