The Carolina Hurricanes were formed in 1972 as the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association. It wasn't until they moved to North Carolina, in 1979, that they got their current name. The Hurricanes are apart of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference, where they play at the RBC Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The leader of the Hurricanes is Paul Maurice, who started head coaching the Hurricanes in 2008. He has been able to lead the Hurricanes to impressive regular and post season records. In his first year, he was able to get the Hurricanes to the playoffs, which hasn't happened since 2006. In franchise history, he has had the most playoff games coached and the most playoff wins. He started coaching the Hurricanes in 1997 and was then hired by the Toronto Maple Leafs. In 2008, the Hurricanes took him back to coach them once again.

In the 2010-11 season, the Hurricanes were ranked third in the Southeast Division in the Eastern Conference. With 40 wins and 31 loses, they just missed a playoff spot.

The RBC Center, in Raleigh, North Carolina, is the home to the Hurricanes. Opened in 1999, it is able to hold 18,680 people. Over the years, it has received new audio and video equipment for a better fan experience.

The Hurricanes have made it to the Stanley Cup championship twice. Their first appearance was in 2002, where they lost to the Detroit Red Wings. In 2006, they got another shot and won their first Stanley Cup by beating the Edmonton Oilers in Game Seven.

When the Hurricanes first started playing in the NHL, they were unable to get to the Stanley Cup, but over time, they have made it to the championship twice, with one victory. If the conditions are just right and the wind is blowing, their is a good chance that the Hurricanes are coming your way and you better watch out for a great hockey team.
