Taking a quick look back at last season, there was little hope for the Carolina Panthers in the beginning. It appeared that the much anticipated talents of Cam Newton were disappointing to say the least. However, when the general manager Marty Hurney was replaced by Dave Gettleman, and the team lost the next few games, suddenly the unexpected happened. Newton took off as the star player , and the team won the last four, finishing the season 7-9.
Another thing to consider is the fact that the head coach, Ron Rivera, has kept his position. Fans of the Carolina Panthers are eagerly waiting for the next season to begin for this reason. If the Panthers were able to turn around such a bad losing season into a winning streak, what could they do if they started the next season like that? This becomes even more realistic considering the retention of both the head coach and the lead quaterback.
One change that could have a potentially negative initial impact is the switch of offensive coordinator. Mike Shula was promoted to this position from his spot as the quarterbacks coach. Ken Doursey will be stepping up from scouting into the position of quarterbacks coach.Of note, when Ryan Kalil returns from his foot injury he sustained last season, the Carolina Panthers will have what is considered to be one of the best offensive lines in the NFL.
During the off season, Chris Gamble announced that he would be retiring from his position as cornerback. Carolina continues to have problems producing a strong secondary, and with Gamble's unexpected retirement, they are left with potentially inadequate starters at this position. Instead of focusing on their problems in secondary and safety, the Carolina Panthers chose to improve upon the much needed upgrade of the defensive front interior. It appears that much of the Carolina Panthers ability to win rests on the shoulders of Cam Newton. He has shown to be the head of the pack of this team based off of last season's charades. Going out of the gate Panthers are hoping for a continuance of their end of last season victory streak. This may be hard considering six of their games will be against teams that went to the playoffs.
