Last season ended on a disappointing note for the Chicago Bears, who missed the playoffs despite having a 10 win 6 loss season and starting the season with a 7 and 1 record. The off season was very tumultuous; the team fired head coach Lovie Smith, brought in new head coach Marc Trestman along with his coaching staff, and 8 time Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher retired.
All eyes will be on quarterback Jay Cutler this season as he enters into the final year of his current contract with the Bears. The team made improvements to the offensive line which played very poorly a season ago. A lot of the team's success on offense will hinge on the offensive line's ability to keep Cutler on his feet. Cutler has many weapons if he gets support from his offensive line. Cutler's favorite target, Brandon Marshall, figures to be a top 5 receiver, running back Matt Forte always seems to be one of the elite running backs in the league, and the team also brought in new Tight End Martellus Bennett and new receiver Alshon Jeffery to go along with Marshall.
It will seem strange for Bears' fans to not see Brian Urlacher anchoring the defense from the middle linebacker position. The play of the defense disappointed last season and was a large part of the reason why the team missed the playoffs. The longtime Denver Bronco DJ Williams was signed in the off season to fill Urlacher's position on the defense. The cornerback tandem of Tim Jennings and Charles Tillman remain one of the best in the NFL.
The success of the Bears' 2013 season depends in large part on the play of Jay Cutler. All other teams in the NFC Central made significant improvements in the off season but the Packers are still the favorite to win the division. Cutler will need to have a career year to silence his critics and compete with the Packers for the division.
