The first run in the Chicago Cubs team history was made by center fielder Paul Hines. He reached base due to a throwing error in the second inning. The White Stockings, as they were first known, went on to be crowned the first National League championship. They also had nicknames like the Colts and Orphans. As the league began to grow so did this organization. They have been considered to be one of the first dynasties by winning six of eleven of the first titles.

The Chicago Cubs play in the Central Division of the National League in the Major League Baseball association. In this division they compete directly with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers, St Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds and the Houston Astros.

The Cubs have a rich tradition of a loyal fan base. They have been fielding a team since 1876, which makes them the second longest standing team to play the game of baseball. Since 1916 they have played in historic Wrigley Field. This ballpark can hold up to just over 38,000 people. Many fans from around the world travel to Chicago just to experience this ballpark.

Prior to relocating to Wrigley, they had played in five other locations. As a team they have won two World Series championships. They have had five different uniform logos and changes. Their current sleeve patch depicts a crawling bear and they have used this since 1997. The preferred uniform according to many fans is white with pinstripes.

The Cubs have thirty seven Hall of Famers, nine Most Valuable Players and four Cy Young award winners. Popular players that have had their jersey numbers retired include Jackie Robinson, Ferguson Jenkins, Greg Maddux, Billy Williams, Ryne Sandberg, Ernie Banks and Ron Santo. Some of these players have been recorded as among the best ever in their position as well as within the league.
