Chvrches (pronounced “churches”) are a Scottish electronic band that was formed in 2011 and consists of lead vocalist Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook on guitar and bass, and Martin Doherty on synthesizers, samplers, and vocals. Not wasting anytime Chvrches released Recover EP in March of 2013 their debut studio album “The Bones of what You Believe” was released not long after in September of 2013. Set to be released this September 2015 is their second studio album, “Every Open Eye”. Continuing to make a name for themselves, the band was listed as fifth on the BBC’s Sound of 2013 list of the most promising new music talent. “The Mother We Share” the hit single from their debut album, “The Bones of What You Believe” was featured in the opening video for the 2014 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony in Glasgow, Scotland, in the summer of 2014. Known around the circuit as having a clean sound usually dubbed mostly electronic or synthpop, Chvrches sound has been described by Neon Gold as “a godless hurricane of kinetic pop energy” and Kitty Empire of the Observer wrote they “make accessible electro-pop that’s only just short of brilliant”. Chvrches band members say there were influenced by acts such as Madonna, Eurythmics, Prince, Manoeuvres in the Dark, Tubeway Army, among many others. The band still writes, records, mixes, and masters all their songs in a basement studio in Glasgow.
