The Colorado Avalanche were originally the Quebec Nordiques, who were formed in 1972 in the World Hockey Association and were located in Quebec City, Quebec . The Nordiques moved to the NHL in 1979 and then in 1995, they turned into the Avalanche. The Avalanche are in Northwest Division of the Western Conference, where they play at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. The current head coach of the Avalanche is Joe Sacco. He has only been coaching the Avalanche for two seasons and is the fifth head coach in Avalanche history. Knowing that he had the youngest team in the NHL did not stop him from an impressive first impression. Sacco was able to get the Avalanche to a second place finish in the Northwest Division and a spot in the playoffs. They became the first Western Conference team to make it into the playoffs right after a horrible year of getting last in the Conference. In the 2010-11 season, the Avalanche were able to acquire 30 wins and had 44 loses. This was only able to get them to third in the Northwest Division with no spot in the playoffs. In 1996, the Avalanche were able to get to their first Stanley Cup appearance and win it against the Florida Panthers with a sweep. It wasn't until 2001, when they would get another shot at the Stanley Cup against the New Jersey Devils and win it in Game Seven. Although the Colorado Avalanche are currently a young team and are still trying to find their rhythm, they have plenty of talent that just needs to find experience. When their talent and experience meet, a great team will form that will remind every Avalanche fan of the team that won the Stanley Cups.
The Pepsi Center is the home to the Avalanche and was first opened in 1999. It has been nick named The Can for its unique design. The Pepsi Center can seat 18,007 people and can host a number of sporting and concert events.
