Spring training is just around the corner and the Colorado Rockies are slowly putting their pieces of the puzzle together for the 2012 season. Manager Jim Tracy will have some new faces and some of the familiar faces are gone. Some of the Rockies that have moved on to greener pastures, are Ryan Spillborg, Mark Ellis, Kevin Millwood, Seth Smith, Aaron Cook, Chris Ianetta, and Clayton Mortensen just to name a few. Some of the new faces are OF Michael Cuddyer, INF Mark Scutaro, C Ramon Hernandez, P Tyler Chatwood, P Jamie Moyer, and INF Casey Blake. Some of the places the Rockies are looking for help are at second and third base. They are hopeful that the acquisitions of Mark Scutaro and Casey Blake will help provide the stability and consistency they have lacked in those two positions. Two veterans added to the squad are catcher Ramon Hernandez and pitcher Jamie Moyer. Moyer at 49 is the oldest player in the MLB if he can make the squad. He didn't pitch in 2011, but is determined to make a comeback after Tommy John surgery. Moyer will also be able to help out the very young pitching staff of the Rockies as he brings 24 years of major league experience with him.
It looks like the NL West has gotten stronger throughout the division, but the Rockies could be in the thick of the race come September if some of their pieces of the puzzle come together. There are a lot of ifs, but if Helton can stay healthy and have another good year, if Dexter Fowler can put together a whole year like he did the second half of last year, if Scutaro and Blake can solidify the infield, if Cuddyer plays up to his expectations, and if Rox can find five solid starters out of all of those promising young arms, maybe they will be in contention come August and September.
