Daughtry is much more than just a rare rock band to emerge from the ranks of American Idol. It is a rock band constantly on the move, spending significantly more time on stage performing for those with Daughtry tickets than in the recording studio. It is difficult to argue against this strategy, as hard rock has been more dominant on the live stage than on the charts. In 2012, Daughtry will be joining 3 Doors Down on a 19-city tour of the United States from November 17 to December 15, 2012.

To begin with, Daughtry emerged after Season 5 of American Idol, when frontman Chris Daughtry emerged the runner up to Taylor Hicks. In typical American Idol fashion, Daughtry would outsell Hicks. Somehow, despite Chris’s second career start with one of the fastest selling albums in the Soundscan era, the group would choose to stay on the road. Since the self-debut album, the group has only released two albums, Leave This Town and Break the Spell.

Yet, there has rarely been a month since the formation of the group seven years ago in which the group has not toured. As mentioned in the opening paragraph, this has been a fortuitous decision. Hard rock is hardly a thriving music genre on the charts. Unless a group has 20 years and several platinum records behind, most hard rock groups can best hope for gold status. Most hard rock albums are branded abominations by the critics and are lost in the charts.

There are millions of fans who love the genre though, and they seem to prefer the music live. Thus, Chris Daughtry, an artist who emulates Creed, Alice in Chains, and STP, has kept just enough albums to put together some chart hits. Most of these are early songs from the band: “It’s Not Over”, “Home”, and “Over You”. These tracks are the anchors for the set list each and every night.
