This living legend is well-known for his unique blending of traditional country, honky-tonk, bar-room ballads, and western swing music. As of 2011, he has had 58 singles reach the Number One position on the music charts. This makes him the world record holder, exceeding all other artists in all other genres throughout history. The previous record had been set at 40 by Conway Twitty.
He plays the guitar and piano, and has been active in the music industry since 1975. His first break was in 1981 when his song, "Unwound, " topped the music charts. Since then, he has received numerous awards and achieved wide-spread recognition.
Among his accolades are the Artist of the Decade award from the Country Music Academy (CMA), induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and several Grammy Awards. In addition, he has received numerous Entertainer and Album of the Year Awards from the CMA and the Academy of Country Music (ACM). The Texas State University at San Marcos has granted him an honorary Doctoral Degree in Humane Letters.
