Predicting where Indianapolis Colts will finish the 2013 season is an intriguing task. After the unmitigated disaster that was 2011, when they finished with a record of 2-14 (wins-losses), last season was meant to be year zero, when they just needed to improve and build a new dynasty around their shiny new quarterback Andrew Luck. As luck would have it, the new quarterback was a real talent; they finished with an impressive 11-5 record and qualified for the playoffs.
The Indianapolis Colts definitely overachieved by anybody’s standards last season, hence this time round any sort of playoff run from the competitive AFC south division will be considered a success.
The loss of Bruce Arians who has gone to be the head coach for Arizona might not affect Andrew Luck too much, since he has been reunited with Pep Hamilton who used to be his offensive coach back in college. The addition of Bjoern Werner is definitely the most interesting move they have made this offseason, and as he will be playing as an outside linebacker, he will have to deliver his usual gritty runs and determined plays if he is to have an impact on the team’s success. They have also added Gosder Cherilus, who was a bit disappointing at the Lions, to protect Andrew Luck and help to reduce the high number of turnovers that he made last season, together with guard Hugh Thornton.
The loss of their head coach, whose battle with cancer certainly galvanized the team and made them a more united and determined force, will be a hard loss to take. Add that to the relative quality of the team, and a playoff run starts to look all the more unlikely. However, that said, in Andrew Luck, they do have a quarterback with the potential to be one of the best in the league, and they have strengthened to protect him better and play to his passing strengths.
Anything is possible, but Indianapolis Colts will do great to get seven or eight wins, and I will stick my head out and say that a playoff run is definitely beyond them this time round. The 2013 season will be a season of consolidation a steady rebuilding for them.
