One of the ultimate groups of the 80s has got to be Journey the Rock Band. This group sold untold millions of recordings and did stadium tours around the globe for much of that decade. Air play was constant and young and old alike loved this group. With pop sensibilities and hard-rock riffs, they created a body of work that is classic in its scope.

Yet many listeners never knew the whole story of where this group came from, and how they soared to such heights. Most fans understand the concept of musicians paying their dues, and these guys most certainly paid theirs. While they helped define the 80s as a musical era, they have roots that go far deeper.

The nucleus of Journey was formed by musicians who had been performing as Carlos Santana's back unit. Specifically, keyboardist and singer Greg Rollie, along with guitarist Neil Schon, made up much of what came to be Santana's signature sound. As the 60s came to a close and the mass marketing of the 70s began to grow, the new group was formed.

The original Journey was not nearly as well known or successful as the later formation was, or as Santana was in its heyday. While they did tour extensively in the 70s, they received very little air play, and would be considered little more that a cult band at best. However, with the addition of Steve Perry on vocals, this would change dramatically.

With a new producer, whose eyes were clearly on greater success, the group agreed to add the unique talents of Perry to its lineup. The new songs were carefully crafted pop gems that showcased his soaring tenor, alone with Rollie's still powerful tones. The hits started coming in, as both solo vocals for Perry and duets with both singers.

Eventually, all of the vocal duties were Perry's alone, and Rollie moved on. But the hits just kept on coming for the group. The new lineup of Journey the Rock Band took the country by storm throughout the 80s, until Perry decided to leave as well. However, the group is still performing on the classic rock circuit, with a variety of lineups at work. Their hits will always be a reminder of a decade of tremendous success for the band, as well as huge hits for the fans.
