The History Of The Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional sports franchise headquartered out of Kansas City, Missouri. The team is a member of the American Football Conference's Western Division inside the National Football League. Originally, they were called the Texans and were located in Dallas but were relocated to Kansas City in 1963. In 1970, they joined the NFL during an AFL merger.

The Chiefs were formed out of businessman Lamar Hunt's desire to secure an NFL team for Dallas, Texas. When he was turned down he instead decided to form his own league, the AFL, and started the Dallas Texans. The Texans played for a little over three seasons but were not very popular among fans. That, paired with the fact that Dallas was unable to support two sports teams, led the Texans to being relocated to Kansas City and renamed the Chiefs.

A fan contest determined the new name, which was inspired by the nickname of Mayor Bartle. Five thousand votes were sent in and although only forty two entries suggested the name "Chief", it was selected anyway.

The team quickly became one of the AFL's strongest teams and went on to go to the most playoff games in its history. Their winning streak and popularity eventually helped them merge into the National Football League in the form of a merger game that was to be played in 1967. The World Championship game was dubbed the Super Bowl after the popular children's toy the 'Super Ball'.

The franchise plays all of their home games at Arrowhead Stadium, the fourth largest arena in the National Football League. The complex holds over seventy six thousand people and was constructed in the early seventies. Arrowhead is notoriously known within the NFL as one of the hardest stadiums to play in for opposing teams, all noise inside of it is made by the fans.
