Katy Perry Singer and Songwriter Soars To Success

Katy Perry singer and songwriter is also known as an actress, since the 26-year-old has appeared in several films and television series. She was born on Oct. 25th, 1984 in Santa Barbara, California under her birth name of Kathryn Elizabeth Hudson.

Her parents were Christian pastors and this led to her listening to and singing gospel music as a child. In 2001 she released a gospel album under the name Katy Hudson. However, it wasn't very successful. She followed it up with recordings for a solo project in 2004/5, but the tracks weren't released.

Her big break came in 2007 when she was offered a contract by the Capitol Music Group, which was her fourth different record label in a span of seven years. Hudson took her current name for her professional career and then released an online track called "Ur So Gay" in November. The song earned her some public attention, but it didn't make it into the music charts.

Things changed with the release of her next song in 2008 when "I Kissed a Girl" rose to the top of the charts in several countries. Due to the success of the single, Perry then released her debut mainstream album called "One of the Boys". It was as successful as the single and was the 33rd top-selling album in the world in 2008, going platinum in America. "I Kissed a Girl" and another single called "Hot n Cold" went multi-platinum.

Her second album called "Teenage Dream" came out in 2010 and debuted on the Billboard 200 chart at number one. The collection also spawned the hit singles "Teenage Dream", "Firework", "California Gurls", "Last Friday Night" (T. G. I. F.), and "ET". All of these went to the top of Billboard's Hot 100 chart which made "Teenage Dream" one of nine albums ever to contain at least four number-one Billboard Hot 100 singles. In fact, Katy Perry singer and songwriter was the first performer ever to spend 52 straight weeks in Billboard's top 10.
