The 2015 season was a rough one for the San Diego Chargers, as anything that could have gone wrong, basically did. 21 players were placed on injured reserve, they did not manage to win one divisional game, and San Diego ended the season with a 4-12 record. One victory for the Chargers is that they avoided relocation and will remain in San Diego. Despite the awful performance last season, the 2016 roster has the makings of a winning team and fans should be hopeful for their chances. Quarterback Philip Rivers threw a career high 661 passes in 2015 to make-up for the anemic run game and will have tight end Antonio Gates and wideout Keenan Allen back and healthy to start the season. Rivers will have a legitimate vertical threat this season, as San Diego signed former Cleveland Brown receiver Travis Benjamin, whose speed and versatility should be a nice compliment to Allen. The Chargers used their second-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft on Arkansas’ tight end Hunter Henry, who should learn and grow under Gates, and likely assume the starting role at some point in the future. In the third round, San Diego added depth to their offensive line with USC center Max Tuerk, who is super versatile and can fill in anywhere should injury plague their line again in 2016.

On the opposite side of the ball, the Chargers defense is highlighted by cornerback Jason Verett, outside linebacker Melvin Ingram and sophomore linebacker Denzel Perryman. During free agency, San Diego acquired former Seattle Seahawks nose tackle Brandon Melbane, who should anchor the interior of their 3-4 defense. They also added two veterans to their secondary in cornerback Casey Hayward and safety Dwight Lowery, who is tasked with replacing long-time Charger favorite and now Baltimore Raven Eric Weddle. San Diego also added a rookie defensive end via their first-round draft pick. Ohio State’s Joey Bosa should be a solid addition to their run defense and contribute in 2016.

Look for the Chargers to have a much improved record over their disastrous 2015 outing. Fans are excited to have their team remain in town and should be sure to secure their San Diego Chargers tickets for the 2016 season. Grab some popcorn, a foam finger and come on out to support this talented squad all season long.
