Lynyrd Skynyrd’s music legacy began over four decades ago in Jacksonville, Florida and has gone through a few transitions along the way. In 1977, a tragic plane crash took the lives of three of the band’s members; singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and vocalist Cassie Gaines, who all perished when their twin engine plane went down in Mississippi. Three days prior they had just released the album “Street Survivors” building on the success of their previous hits including “Free Bird”, “Gimme Three Steps” and “Sweet Home Alabama”.
This horrific tragedy left the remaining band members involved in various projects for about a decade until reuniting in 1987 with Gary Rossington, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson, Artimus Pyle and guitarist Ed King -who had left the band two years prior to the crash- joined by Ronnie Van Zant’s younger brother Johnny as their new lead singer. Sadly, the group has experienced more loss over the years with the deaths of Allen Collins, Leon Wilkeson and Huey Thomasson, yet Lynyrd Skynyrd rocks on with original member Gary Rossington joined by the younger Van Zant, Rickey Medlock, Mark “Sparky” Matejka, Michael Cartellone, Johnny Colt, Peter Keys, Dale Krantz Rossington and Carol Chase. This rock and roll powerhouse group is set to tour the Unites States this summer beginning at the end of May in New York and wrapping up in September in Arizona, hitting multiple states and cities along the way. Their schedule is packed with everything from casino stops to wineries to county fairs. Their signature Southern rock sound appeals to multiple generations of rock fans and is a must see for concert lovers. Make sure Lynyrd Skynyrd tickets are on your to do list for a fun filled rockin’ summer.
