The members of Mew first met in the seventh grade in Hellerup, Denmark. Even though they couldn’t play instruments yet, singer Jonas Bjerre, guitarist Bo Madsen, bassist Johan Wohlert, and drummer Silas Graae had the desire to make music together.
Although they initially failed as a band entitled Orange Dog, they came back together in their teens to form Mew. The Danish quartet is inspired by the Pixies, My Bloody Valentine, Dinosaur Jr., and Prince. At their very first gig, the space pop innovators impressed a book-publishing agent in the audience so profoundly that he convinced his company to change their business plan to release Mew’s debut album. To enhance their performances, the Mew live experience came to incorporate background animations created by Bjerre. A Triumph for Man debuted in 1997 to critical acclaim followed by Half the World is Watching Me, released on their own label, Evil Office. The album saw limited release before Mew hooked up with Sony for an international deal. That resulted in Frengers, 2003 which picked up Album of the Year and Band of the Year honors at the Danish Music Critics Awards. Mew gained popularity worldwide with their American release And the Glass Handed Kites in 2006, and began touring with Bloc Party. Fans are drawn to their pop dramatics, intricate passages and stunning atmospheric sound. Two additional albums have followed as the band has gained traction globally. Mew continues to tour bringing their unique sound to Japan, Europe, the US, Canada and all parts in between.
