The Miami Dolphins Football Team
A year ago, the Miami Dolphins were coming off a rough season. Featuring a brand new coaching staff, the Dolphins were the subject of HBO's Hard Knocks series, and they didn't exactly make an impressive show. They lost every game in the preseason and looked like a team that could challenge for a top pick in the 2013 draft. When the real action started, however, a surprisingly solid performance from rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill and a stout Dolphins defense helped propel Miami to a pedestrian, yet respectable, 7-9 record.
After four straight seasons of being just below .500 and a 7-9 record in 2012, they went into the 2013 offseason planning to make a splash. Splash they did, first by signing free agent receiver Mike Wallace to a $60 million contract, then signing several other free agents in an effort to take the Dolphins to the next level. When all was said and done, GM Jeff Ireland spent over $126 million in guaranteed money They followed that up with a somewhat radical logo and uniform change, and finally by trading up in the draft to #3 to pick pass rusher Dion Jordan from Oregon. The Dolphins focused on getting Tannehill quality weapons and increasing the speed and turnover ability of the defense.
With the Jets and Bills both having quarterback transition issues, the Dolphins look to be the strongest challenge to the Patriots' reign of terror in the AFC East. How ready they will be rests largely on the shoulders of their second-year signal caller. If Tannehill, who had a respectable season in a year he was expected to sit and watch, is ready to take the next step in his progression, the Dolphins could finally be ready to challenge Brady and the Patriots for the AFC East title. If he falters, or the new weapons aren't ready for prime time, Miami may be bringing in a new coaching staff all over again next offseason.
