As professional baseballs teams go, the Florida Marlins are relatively new compared to many other teams out there today. The franchise was established in 1993 and was based in Miami. The team share their home game stadium with two other teams at the sun life stadium, one a football team and the other being the Miami Dolphins.

Their most noted achievements in the game are no doubt the winning of the World Series in 1997, just four years after being established. They also went on to win the World Series a second time in 2003. Both times they made it to the post season.

According to Forbes magazine, the franchise is worth well over $300 million. The owners have made plans for a new $500+ million ball park due to open in 2012 and as part of the deal the first name will be changed from Florida to Miami in the same year.

The name came from the actual fish species and originated from when the team was minor league, their nickname is 'The Fish'.

A few recognized players who signed with the marlins were Jeff Conine from 1993 to 1997 and 2003 to 2005, he appeared in both world series wins and earned the all star MVP trophy in 1995. Miguel Cabrera debut was in 2003 and in his first appearance hit a game winning home run. Gary Sheffield was a player from 1993 to 1997 and hit 112 home runs including 42 in 1996 making it a club record.

In regular season team history there have been four no hitters, Al Leiter, Kevin Brown, A. J. Burnett and Anibal Sanchez all against teams in the NL West.

The number five was retired before the first ever regular season game back in 1993 during a pre game ceremony to honor team president Carl Barger's favorite player, Joe DiMaggio. Barger died just before the start of Florida Marlins first season in 1993.
