The Ups And Downs Of The Milwaukee Brewers

The previous Wisconsin team, the Braves, moved to Atlanta in 1966. A minority owner, Bud Selig, currently the commissioner of Major League Baseball (MLB), would not let Milwaukee be without a major league team. In 1969, Selig purchased a bankrupted Seattle Pilots team and moved, what then became known as the Milwaukee Brewers to Wisconsin.

When Bud Selig was looking for another team for the city, he brought in exhibition games to play at County Stadium. In a nine game series, attendance topped 260,000 fans. Using the Chicago White Sox as the base team, this series of nine games brought in as many people as a third of Chicago's whole season.

Because of the areas beer industry, the organization adopted the name Brewers. For the next thirty-two years, the organization played in County Stadium, (est. 1953). Home games, as of 2001, are played at Miller Park, which is named after the local brewery.

Originally brought into MLB as an American League (AL) West Division team, they were later moved to the AL East; in 1997, the franchise entered the National League Miller Park Tickets(NL). It is currently part of the NL Central Division.

The early going of this new team was fairly rough. The franchise wouldn't have a winning season until 1978 when it placed second in the NL the organization was discussed as being in contention for the pennant. Followed by four successful seasons, the team made the AL Division Series and the 1982 World Series but lost to the NY Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals respectively.

Since 1982, the Milwaukee Brewers have had many highs and lows. In 2004, ownership changed to Mark Attanasio. He immediately began making amends to restore fan faith in the franchise. Their last Division Series appearance was in 2008 were the Philadelphia Phillies won by two runs. At the All-Star Break in 2011, they were sharing first in their division with St. Louis.
