Strikeforce Challengers 18 MMA Mixed Martial Arts Fight Card

Many people are excited about all of the mixed martial arts events on the horizon. Besides the UFC, Strikeforce is becoming well-known in MMA fighting circles, and has some exciting fights scheduled. Here is a look at up-and-coming MMA mixed martial arts event, Strikeforce Challengers 18.

Main Event

This event is set for August 18, 2011, and features lightweights UFC veteran Jorge Gurgel against Joe Duarte. After not having a great deal of success in the UFC, Jurgel is trying his hand at Strikeforce, to help rebuild his fighting career. He is a second degree black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu, and is well known for his work with former middleweight champion Rich "Ace" Franklin. Born in 1977 in Brazil, Jorge Gurgel, has been in the United States since high school. He now is a US citizen, and is also a full-time jiu jitsu instructor.

On the other hand, Joe Duarte has won his last four bouts, and has a recent victory over Saad Awad, in April of 2011. Duarte is a brown belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu. Born in Guam in 1983, Duarte has been active in sports since six years of age. He loves skateboarding and also mountain biking, and has been involved in combat sports since the eighth grade.

Other Notable Fights

Also on the card, Nate James takes on Danillo Villefort in a middleweight contest, and lightweights Eric Wisely and Pay Healy square off. You also can watch women featherweights Sara D'Alelio and Ronda Rousey, go at it, and Roy Jones Jr. And Derrick Mehmen meet in a light heavyweight match.

Strikeforce Challengers 18 MMA mixed martial arts event will be held at the Palms Casino Resort, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Also on the fight card will be light heavyweight Gian Villante fighting Keith Berry. Welterweights Lukasz Les and Nah-Shon Burrell will square off, and Chad Leonhardt fights Mike Bronzoulis. This event can be seen on Showtime at 11pm, Eastern Time, August 18, 2011.
