In 1988, the Hornets found the start of their NBA campaign in Charlotte, North Carolina. After a 14 season haul, the team relocated to New Orleans to become the New Orleans Hornets. The unfortunate events caused by Hurricane Katrina lead the team to move to Oklahoma City, but they were able to return to their home in time for the 2007-08 NBA season. The Hornets are in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference, where they a play at the New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Monty Williams became the Hornets' head coach in 2010 and was able to lead them to the seventh playoff seed in his first year. Before becoming the Hornets' head coach, he was an assistant coach for the Portland Trailblazers for five years. He is the youngest head coach in the NBA at 39 years old.
The 2010-11 season lead the Hornets to 46 wins and 36 loses. Their efforts placed them at third in the Southwest Division with the seventh playoff seed in the Western Conference. Their playoff experience was cut short by the Los Angeles Lakers in Game Six.
The home of the Hornets is the New Orleans Arena, which was opened in 1999 with 18,500 people. This arena had the extraordinary honor of housing medical operations when Hurricane Katrina was leaving a devastating wake. The arena's stable design allowed it to be reopened for normal operations a month after the storm.
The Hornets have been unable to secure a NBA championship in New Orleans or Charlotte, but they have done what most teams will never have a chance to do. They were able to use their facility to help their fans in their time of need and they were able to stand as symbol for a united city after it had been devastated.
