The History Of The New York Giants

The New York Giants joined the NFL in 1925. It is the only one out of the five that joined within that same year that are still going strong today. Throughout its long and colorful history, this team has managed to earn seven NFL titles. Four of them were prior to the existence of the Super Bowl and three of them when the Super Bowl came into being.

They changed their name in 1927, to differentiate themselves from the baseball team that held the same name. They became the New York Football Giants. The baseball team has since moved to San Francisco but the football team still remains in New Jersey.

They have had a long standing rivalry with the Philadelphia Eagles that has dated back to 1933. It is known as the best rivalry in the sporting world of today. This is still apparent in the NFC Eastern Division.

They have had much success with some of their games. During their first season they defeated the All New Britain NFL team on their home turf, 26-0. The third year paved the way to their first NFL title. The nineteen thirties and forties brought them some success as well. During the period of the early sixties, right through to 1980, they did not even make it to the championship playoffs.

There have been many people that made up this NFL team, from the owner, coaches and individual players. Many have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In fact, an amazing amount of 27 players from the Giants are inductees.

The financial status of the team has been turbulent to say in the least. It was bought by Tim Mara for the measly sum of 500 dollars back in 1925. In 1991, Tim Mara sold out his share for a reported 80 million dollars. The team is still under the co-ownership of the Mara and Tisch families.
