The New York Islanders have a very peculiar formation story. Formed in 1972, the Islanders formation was an attempt by the NHL to block the World Hockey Association out of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, which is where the Islanders have played since their formation. Today, the Islanders are in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.

Jack Capuano is the current head coach of the Islanders. Although, it is his first time head coaching the Islanders, he has been an Islanders' assistant coach since 2005. He was not named full-time head coach till April 2, 2011.

The Islanders' latest season consisted of 39 loses and only 30 wins, which finished them 5th in the Atlantic Division without a trip to the playoffs..

Before 1972, the current home of the Islanders was just an old Army and Air Force base, but the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum was opened in 1972 and has been the Islanders home ever since. The capacity of the arena is 16,250 people and has the special feature of having no interior columns and no obstructed sight lines. Currently, a plan, called the Lighthouse Project, will give the Islanders a new home.

The Islanders have had five Stanley Cup appearances and have won four. They have also accomplished the substantial feat of winning four Stanley Cups in a row from 1980 to 1983. They were able to make it to the Stanley Cup finals in 1984, but were defeated by the Edmonton Oilers.

The New York Islanders are more than just a blocking team against the World Hockey Association, they proved that they were a force to be reckoned with by winning four Stanley Cups in a row, always giving their fans something else to cheer about.
