As one of baseball's original expansion clubs, the New York Mets were founded in 1962. Originally NY played their home games at the now historic, Polo Grounds located in upper Manhattan. They moved to Flushing Meadows, NY, the home of Shea Stadium in 1964 where they played all of their home games until 2008. During the 2009 season they moved into their new home, Citi Field, located near Shea.

During 1957, the Brooklyn Dodgers and NY Giants moved to California. When the new team was developed, they acquired their colors by taking the blue from the Dodgers and the orange from the Giants. Their name was derived from the Metropolitans Club in NY. In 1969 they won their first World Series. They have been in the World Series three times since with their last win being in 1986. Along with their two World Series titles, they also hold four National League pennants for the years 1969, 1973, 1986, and 2000.

They have also held the record for game attendance in NY for nearly 30 years. Part of this record includes breaking the 1948 Yankees record in 1970 by bringing in over 2.5 million spectators. They held this record, breaking it themselves five times, until 1999 when the Yankees regained it.

The biggest rivalry between the Mets is with both the Philadelphia Phillies and the Atlanta Braves. The rivalry they share with the Braves began during the 1969 Championship Series when the series was won by the team that was the first expansion team to make it that far. The rivalry became even more heated during the 1990s when the divisions were realigned and they ended up in the same division as the Braves.

The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets rivalry became even more heated during 2006 when both teams were playing equally as well. NY went on to win the division that year and the Phillies won each year from 2007 through 2010. The Subway Series, when this team and the Yankees play in the World Series, was last played during the 2000 season with the Yankees taking the win.
