The New York Yankees have provided some of the best baseball stories and best baseball players in history such as Babe Ruth, Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle. They are the most successful team in major league baseball history, and hold twenty seven world championships. Although they are a well known New York team now, the history of the team begins somewhere else.
In 1901 this team was placed in Baltimore Maryland, where John McGraw was manager and partial owner, and went by the nickname The Orioles. In 1902, McGraw became a manager of the Giants but remained in control of his interest with the Orioles. There later became a problem when he started to fight over the players with the Giants owner John T. Brush, and in 1903 the two decided to hold a conference and settle their disputes over the team. After a vote, the National League agreed to allow the junior circuit to establish the franchise in New York.
The new ballpark was built a few blocks from the Giants on one of the highest points in Manhattan, and was nicknamed the Hilltop. They were originally given the name " The Invaders", and then were referred to as the Highlanders for several years after that. In 1904 the team started to be referred to as Yanks, and stuck when
newspapers and press started referring to them as The Yankees in their headlines.
The team had their ups and downs at Hilltop Park, and in 1911 when the Giants ballpark burned down, the teams shared the remaining park and became cordial and friendly with each other. When the Polo Grounds were rebuilt in 1913, the Highlanders moved in and officially became known as the Yankees.
This team now plays their home games at the new stadium that was opened in April of 2009, and they went on to win the World Series later that year. Making the move from Boston to Manhattan not only gave us the New York Yankees, but provided baseball fans with heroes and a team to love and support forever.
