They are the next generation of boy band from Britain. One Direction has dropped the choreographed clothing and dancing, embraced labels, and has proven so popular they announced a 2013 tour while the 2012 tour was still underway and were already selling out the concert dates. One Direction tickets are the hottest tickets in the world and this is a fact one must face even if the writer of this passage feels like he is writing for Tiger Beat while composing the line.
Where the heck did this band come from? They went from a group quickly put together after five failed solo auditions to a third place finish. Judge Simon Cowell was so impressed by the group that he offered them a record deal with his label Syco Records despite the elimination. The first album, Up All Night, and the first single, “What Makes You Beautiful”, proved Cowell correct as both went number one internationally and they began selling out concerts than Justin freaking Bieber. By the time “One Thing” came out One Direction had seduced teenage audiences and made their parents feel safe on shows like the Today Show.
In addition to their image, One Direction brings elements of teen pop, dance, rock, and electronic pop to the forefront. It will be interesting to discover what the sophomore album, which has yet to be named but is expected to be out in November, will provide audiences. A subject that actually overshadows any question about the music is the relationship between the five boy bandmates (Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson) and the record label. The executives want the guys to keep the partying and fornicating down to a minimum to keep the parents happy. The fans would like anything but this to be true, and the boys agree. So, who is going to win? What kind of debauchery will ensue only to be uncovered by E! a few years after the group has faded from the limelight? How many of the fans that have purchased One Direction Tickets will participate?
