Do you believe in magic? Orlando can show you what magic looks like. In 1986, Orlando wasn't sure what the team name would be. The Orlando Sentinel newspaper allowed the community to suggest ideas on a team name. Magic was then chosen and was entered into the NBA in 1989 and was the first major sports team in Orlando. The Magic is in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference.
Today, the head coach of the Orlando Magic is Stan Van Gundy. He joined the team in 2007 becoming the ninth head coach in franchise history. His overall record with the Magic is 170-76. Gundy was named coach of the month in October/November 2009 and April in 2010.
The Orlando Magic's previous season was not usual for Stan Van Gundy. The team ended with 52 wins and got 2nd in the Southeast Division, however the team lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Atlanta Hawks. This was the first time that Stan had been out of the playoffs so early.
The Orlando Magic's home stadium is the Amway Center, which just recently opened up on October 1, 2010. The Amway Arena was the Magic's first home for the first ten years of the franchise. It then became the TD Waterhouse Centre, and then Amway purchased the rights back.
The Orlando Magic has attended the NBA Finals twice in 1995 & 2009. In the 1995 Finals, they took on the Houston Rockets seeking for their first victory in franchise history. The Magic was not able to stop the Rockets, for they were swept away. In their next NBA Finals appearance in 2009, they took on the Los Angeles Lakers. The Magic wanted this Championship, but the LA Lakers, being one of the best basketball team ever, did not let this happen. The Lakers won the series 4-1.
The Orlando Magic is a good team. Stan Van Gundy has helped the team a lot, but the team is still seeking that NBA Championship. They have the potential to be a Championship team; they just need a little bit of magic to help them get there.
