Center Jason Spezza is entering the second great era of his young career, and he is doing so at a time when he is physically able to take advantage of all the wisdom he has acquired. He is the Sens leading scorer and one of the most prolific point-men in the NHL. Most fans are happy Daniel Alfredsson chose one more season over retirement. He is a sound veteran presence able to keep this club during those tough times. Ottawa has another prolific score on the wing in Milan Michalek and a burgeoning star in Kyle Turris. Turris went on a tear after being acquired midseason last year and has continued to play very well in his new surroundings.

The defensemen are not a very deep group, but star Erik Karlsson is able to control the puck and keep it away from his own net whilst willing his teammates on the frontline to give Goalie Craig Anderson quite a cushion. Karlsson needs an excellent stay-at-home blueliner to balance this back line and Marc Methot is such a player. Sergei Gonchar and Chris Phillips are Karlsson-Methot Lite, but they are a very decent duo for the second line.

In years past, the Ottawa Senators’ goalies would have squandered those leads given to them by this impressive cast. Anderson turned this historical precedent around last year and continues to thrive. This did not stop the front office from insisting Ben Bishop do his best to tease at taking away the starting job. It is difficult to envision Anderson losing this position and it is difficult to believe Ottawa Senators hockey tickets will fall short of another postseason appearance.
