The 76ers is an odd name for any professional sports team, but when the team moved from being the Syracuse Nationals in Syracuse, New York, to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania they needed a new name. They went with the 76ers because that was the year the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia, 1776. The 76ers are in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference, where they play at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The head coach of the 76ers is Doug Collins, who was hired in 2010. His previous coaching experience included the Chicago Bulls, the Detroit Pistons, and the Washington Wizards. Under his leadership, the 76ers did show improvement in the 2010 season and did make it to the playoffs.
The 76ers were able to win as many games as they lost with 41 wins and 41 loses. This odd record for the 2010-11 season placed them at third in the Atlantic Division with the seventh playoff seed in the Eastern Conference. The first round pit them against the star studded Miami Heat, who only allowed them to win one game.
The home of the 76ers is the Wells Fargo Center, which was originally called the Spectrum 2, CoreStates Center, First Union Center, and Wachovia Center. Opened in 1996, it is one of the larger stadiums for basketball with a seating capacity of 20,444 people.
The earlier Syracuse Nationals and the current Philadelphia 76ers have been able to make it to the NBA championships nine times. Of those nine times, they have won only three championships: 1955, 1967, and 1983. Their latest appearance was in 2001 against the Los Angeles Lakers, who won it in Game Five.
Not many people know why they chose their name as the 76ers and not many people know that they were a great basketball team. When the coaches and the players click together, more people will know why they are named the way the are and more people will know that they are a great basketball team.
