2016 for the Philadelphia Phillies will be one of growth and improvement, at least that’s what they are hoping for. With a new GM in Matt Klentak and a young core groups of players, this team needs to mature, gel and rebuild for a promising future.
This offseason, the Phillies acquired pitcher Jeremy Hellickson from Arizona in exchange for Sam McWilliams, adding to their starting rotation. They also traded throwers with the Pirates receiving Charlie Morton for David Whitehead. This season will be Aaron Nola and Jerad Eickhoff’s first full year in a major league rotation so it will be interesting to see how they both pan out for Philadelphia in 2016. As in past years, the Phillies bullpen is a source of strength and despite the loss of Ken Giles and Jonathan Papelbon, they will find the right blend of guys to get the job done again this season. For the first time since 2001, the Phillies will not have Chase Utley or Jimmy Rollins on their roster opening day. Utley was traded to the Dodgers in August to join Rollins who was dealt there the previous offseason. The shortstop position currently belongs to Freddy Galvis but he may have a hard time holding off talented prospect J.P. Crawford. Switch hitting Cesar Hernandez is
consistent on both sides of the ball and will be looking to establish himself at second base in 2016. Veteran first baseman Ryan Howard will play out his last year with the club while across the infield, 23 year-old Maikel Franco is set for his first season in the majors at third base. Philadelphia’s outfield is led by athletic Odubel Herrera along with the speedy Peter Bourjos and Aaron Altherr, who plays well at all three positions.
With a deeper starting rotation and a whole slew of young and hungry players, the Phillies should see improvement in 2016. While they may not be in contention just yet, they are certainly heading in the right direction and should be fun to watch this season. In order to not miss out on all the on-field action this summer, be sure to secure your Philadelphia Phillies tickets and come out to the ballpark and cheer these guys on.
