Since the team's formation in 1968, the Phoenix Suns have had the fourth highest winning percentage in the NBA by winning 56 percent of their games. They also have had 19 seasons with 50 or more wins. The Suns are in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference, where they play at the U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix, Arizona.
Alvin Gentry is the energy source behind the Suns, who hired him as a head coach in 2009. With 30 years of coaching experience under his belt, he was able to drive the Suns to a Western Conference Finals win in his first season. In his first and second year as head coach, he was able to lead the Suns to the highest scoring team in the NBA.
The 2010-11 season brought the Suns 40 wins with 42 loses, which, surprisingly, placed them at second in the Pacific Division. The problem with this is that the Pacific Division was not great in the 2010-11 season, so they were only ranked tenth in the Western Conference and did not get a spot in the playoffs.
The home of the Suns is the U.S Airways Center, known as, "The Purple Palace," for its purple seats, in Phoenix, Arizona, which opened in 1992. When originally opened, it had a seating capacity of 19,023 people, but in 2003, the arena underwent renovations that decreased the seating capacity to 18,422 people. With scorching temperatures as a regular occurrence in Phoenix, a brilliant renovation idea was to build an air conditioned glass pavilion in front of the arena to keep people cool while they waited to purchase tickets or for the doors to open.
The Suns have been able to make it to the NBA championship in 1976 and 1993, but fell to the Boston Celtics and the Chicago Bulls in Game Six. They have been unable to bring home the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy.
No one can predict the outcome of any kind of professional sports game. Sometimes the game doesn't work in your favor, but with a great coach and a great team the Suns will get another shot at the ever so elusive Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy.
