
In 1887 the Pittsburgh Pirates were known as the Allegheneys. They played their first National League game where they defeated the Chicago White Stockings. In the year, 1890, the team is renamed to the Pirates. This same year they have an extremely poor season and end with a 23 - 113 record.
From the period of 1901 through 1903, they won three National League titles. In 1903 they played in the first World Series. Although they did not win, they did come back to win for the first time in 1909. During this year they also opened Forbes Field, where all of their home games were played. They did not play their first game in the Major League in their hometown until 1908.
During 1970, the team returned to the status of a prominent team. Their stadium, Forbes Field was knocked down and the following year Three Rivers Stadium was built. This team was the first one to feature an all black starting lineup. In September of 1971 the starting lineup included top names such as Roberto Clemente, Jackie Hernandez, Willie Stargell and Dave Cash. In December of 1972, Roberto Clemente died in an airplane crash. He was delivering relief supplies to
Nicaragua when the plane when down.
During the 1974 and 75 seasons they made the playoffs again but lost. In 1979 they won the pennant when they beat the Montreal Expos. Later they would go on to face the Baltimore Orioles in the World Series. In the year 2000 the Three Rivers Stadium was shut down and a new stadium was opened during 2001. PNC Park would become their new home.
For the first time since 2004, in May of 2011, they bought their winning record over . 500. The Pittsburgh Pirates did this by defeating the Dodgers in a game on May 9. They also had the privilege of sending three of their players to the Major League All Star Game. This was the first time in over ten years that they sent three players.
