The Portland Trailblazers head into the 2013/14 season with good levels of optimism. After a highly disappointing season last time when they finished with a dismal 33-49 record, they have kept hold of their best assets and tried to add sensibly as they try to aim for a playoff contention in the unpredictable but competitive western conference.
Any hopes that they have are pegged on their star point guard and rookie of the year 2012/13 season, Damian Lilliard. He can score and create, and with a season of experience in his locker, can hopefully avoid the sophomore syndrome. They have also kept LaMarcus Aldridge at the team, an all-star forward who was rumored to be unhappy with the team’s prospects.
New signings to boost the bench
If the Portland Trailblazers are to have a positive impact in the upcoming season, then they will hope their new players to come off the bench and make an impact, as well as new starters will have to make a positive impact. One of these is robin Lopez. The massive 7 foot center, who is a great blocker, will assist in adding defensive solidity and is expected to slot straight in the team.
Young players CJ McCollum and Allen Crabbe have also been drafted in, to assist star man Damian Lilliard when he is tired and running low on gas. Bench players such as Dorell wright, earl Watson and Thomas Robinson have also been brought in so as to help a team that lost its last 13 normal season matches and fade off the playoff contention.
They will also be hoping for better luck with injuries of star players such as Nicolas Batum, who is a good small forward that averaged around 14.3 points per match last season.
The smartest move that Portland Trailblazers have done is to keep hold onto LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lilliard. Although they have strengthened sensibly on their team’s depth, the loss of JJ Hickson will hurt them bad, especially since it is not clear whether robin Lopez is good enough at this level. They are sure to improve on last season though, with a more experienced team and a stronger bench. However, getting to the playoffs is not a walk in the park, and they will fall desperately close after another season of improvement.
