In 1967, the beginning of a great team was formed as the Dallas Chaparrals. The Dallas Chaparrals turned into the Texas Chaparrals and they turned into the great San Antonio Spurs in 1973. The Spurs are in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference, where they play at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.
Behind every great team is a great leader. The Spurs' head coach is Gregg Popovich, who has been with the Spurs since 1996. Under his leadership, the Spurs have been able to win four NBA championships. This has led him to be a part of a group of four other coaches that have won four or more NBA championships.
The Spurs had an unbelievable 2010-11 season with 61 wins and only 21 loses. This record placed them at first in the Southwest Division with the number one playoff seed in the Western Conference. In a bewildering turn of events, the Spurs lost to the eighth seeded Memphis Grizzlies in Game Six.
The home to the Spurs is the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas. The arena was opened in 2002 with a seating capacity of 18,581 people. Before the AT&T Center, the Alamodome was the home to the Spurs. Opened in 1993, it was a relatively new arena, but was built for football. It wasn't until 2002 when the Spurs would get a stadium that would satisfy the players and fans better than the previous location.
The Spurs have had an impressive NBA championship record by winning it every time they have appeared in it. They have had championships in 1999, 2003, 2005, and 2007.
With a great season, the Spurs believed that they would get to the final rounds of the NBA playoffs, but the unpredictability of a basketball game thought otherwise. The beauty of basketball is that there is always next season to try again and to not make the same mistakes that occurred in the previous season.
