A Brief History Of The San Diego Chargers

They started out as part of the American Football League (AFL) which began in nineteen sixty when the then owner Barron Hilton was awarded a franchise for Los Angeles in the AFL. The San Diego Chargers played their first game on September tenth, nineteen sixty-one. It was against the Oakland Raiders at Balboa Stadium with a crushing victory of forty-four to zero.

They played their home games at this same location from nineteen sixty-one to nineteen sixty-six. They then moved to Qualcomm Stadium in nineteen sixty-seven and this has been their base where their home games are played until now.

Their name was chosen by their owner because they were always yelling -charge- at Dodgers Stadium and at UAC games and he liked it. This team whose colors are yellow, powder blue and white are at present under the leadership of their fifteenth head coach Norv Turner. He took up this position four years ago in two thousand and seven.

Among their many great accomplishments are several division championships and several playoff appearances. The chargers had experienced their worst year in two thousand when they lost each of their first eleven games. However, in two thousand and six they enjoyed their best year where they had only one lost.

This team boasts eleven Hall Of Famers and eight PRO Bowl MVP players. They are presently owned by Alex G. Spanos, a real estate developer who owns ninety seven percent of the team and George Pernicano, a restaurateur who owns the other three percent.

While their uniforms have seen several changes throughout the years, the present uniforms of the San Diego Chargers feature white jerseys and Navy pants for road games, Navy blue jerseys and white pants for most home games, and Powder blue jerseys with white pants for designated home games.
