The San Diego Chargers had a really bad 2012 campaign which led to the firing of Coach Norv Turner and G.M A.J Smith. The team went from having one of the best rosters a few years ago to having one of the most inexperienced rosters last season because of the offseason departures of some of the team veterans like Vincent Jackson, one of quarterback Phillip Rivers's favorite targets at wide receiver.
With Norv Turner and A.J Smith being replaced by New G.M Tom Telesco and Rookie Head CoachMike McCoy. The chargers are ready for a fresh start under the new regime. The Chargers hired Ken Whisenhunt as their offensive coordinator, and to be in charge of the gameday play calling, which was a good move considering Whisenhunt was the offensive coordinator of the 2005 Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers, and also guided the 2008 NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals against his former Pittsburgh team.
The Chargers Drafted standout linebacker Manti Te'o from Notre Dame to man the middle at linebacker, D.J Fluker from Alabama at Right Tackle. To help with the running game, Keenan Allen a big, physical receiver who will be a great complementary receiver for Phillip Rivers.
In addition to the highlighted draft picks, the Chargers were busy in the Free agency market. They signed free agent Left Tackle Max Starks away from the Steelers to protect Phillip Rivers's blind side, pass rushing linebacker Thomas Keiser from the Carolina Panthers, former New England Patriot running back Danny Woodhead, also former Dallas Cowboys tight end John Phillips as a backup to Antonio Gates.
The biggest offseason signing for the Chargers was definitely former Indianapolis Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney, who provides the chargers with a pass rushing option that they lacked last season.
While the Chargers are probably not going to make the playoffs this year, the new additions to the team indicate that they are headed in the right direction and have a bright future ahead of them.
