The San Francisco 49ers are not the number one seed in the NFC side of the NFL playoffs, but they do get a first round bye and at least one game with San Francisco 49ers tickets for a home at Candlestick Park. They did this with a 11-4-1 record, which is fortunate as the team came within a loss of losing the right to rest up for another week and tryout kickers to replace the downtrodden David Akers.

The replacement of Akers could be the most important move of the season, which seems ludicrous. Most would assume the decision to start Colin Kaepernick over Alex Smith would easily be the biggest change of the season. Kaepernick is a young exciting playmaker who makes the big plays and the mental errors Smith did not. This decision comes after Smith had a QB Rating over 100 before being concussed. A simple look at the stats show that Frank Gore can no longer carry the entire hopes o the 49ers offense on his back, the decision becomes much easier.

If and when Kaepernick throws the big pick, Coach Jim Harbaugh can rest assured the defense and its ability to simply shut down the opposing offense will stop any points from being surrendered.  Linebackers Aldon Smith, NaVorro Bowman, and Patrick Willis are going to be able to get to the quarterback, stand up the running back, and cover the safety valve. Yet, these postseason games often come down to a last minute field goal, and S.F. could no longer rationalize putting the season on the foot of a kicker suddenly unable to hit anything beyond 40 yards.

This new look offense is meant to avoid falling short in the NFC Championship game again, with the offense failing to deliver when the opposing defense gave it the opening to blow the lead open and start celebrating a trip to New Orleans to play in Super Bowl XLVII at the Superdome
