San Francisco 49ers Are The Pride Of The Bay Area

The San Francisco 49ers is on the list of NFL charter members. The team belonged to the AAFC in 1950 when the league merged with the NFL. Home games are played at Candlestick Park while the headquarters and practice facility are located in nearby Santa Clara.

The organization was the first sports franchise based in the northern California city and among the first anywhere on the west coast. The founders named the team in honor of the prospectors who sought their fortunes during the Gold Rush days. The original logo was inspired by an image on a train boxcar. It featured a gold miner dressed in a red shirt and plaid pants. He was firing a pistol in each hand while jumping in the air. The smoke from one pistol spelled out "Forty-Niners".

The players met the Cincinnati Bengals in their first Super Bowl bid in 1981. Kicker Ray Wersching contributed four field goals to the 26-21 victory. Quarterback Joe Montana was named Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XVI.

The St. Louis Rams, Oakland Raiders and Dallas Cowboys are considered to be their biggest rivals. The rivalry with St. Louis dates back to the very beginning when the Rams were based in Los Angeles and it represented an intrastate affair. In 2008, Sports Illustrated ranked it number eight among the top 10 sports rivalries of all time.

Oakland is located across the water and each game between them, regardless of location, marks another round in an ongoing "Battle of the Bay". Fans take this competition seriously and winners claim bragging rights until the two teams face each other again.

The 49ers had to get past the Dallas team in 1981 to grab the NFC title. A pass from Montana to Dwight Clark during the final minute of play won the game and has been known as "The Catch" in team lore ever since.
