The San Francisco Bay Area originally had the California Golden Seals as their NHL team from 1967 to 1976. When the team left, Howard Baldwin pushed for a new NHL Bay Area team. It wasn't until 1991, when the San Jose Sharks were formed. The Sharks are in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference, where they play at the HP Pavilion at San Jose.

Todd McLellan became the head coach of Sharks in 2008 and it wasn't until long till he was making improvements to the Sharks. He was the third coach, in NHL history, to lead a team to over fifty wins in his first two season with the Sharks. In his second season, he was able to lead the Sharks to first place in the Western Conference. Previously, he had head coaching experience in the International Hockey League, American League, and Western League and was an assistant coach for the Detroit Red Wings.

The Sharks were not a team to mess with in the 2010-11 season. They were able to secure 48 wins with only 25 loses, getting them first in the Pacific Division and the second playoff seed. The Sharks' first victim was the Los Angeles Kings and then the Detroit Red Wings, who were able to extend the series to Game Seven. The Sharks were finally stopped by the Vancouver Canucks in Game Five.

The Shark Tank of the Sharks is the HP Pavilion at San Jose. With a late opening in 1993, caused by design errors, the Sharks played at Cow Palace in Daly City, California. The arena originally opened with a seating capacity of 17,190 people, but renovations, over the years, have increased it to 17,562 people.

The Sharks have never been able to make it to the Stanley Cup championships, but have many appearances in the playoffs that just haven't played out to their liking. Their current coach knows his team and knows hockey, so all they need to do is to wait for the right time to take a strike at the Stanley Cup.
