The Seattle Seahawks joined the National Football League in 1976 as an expansion team at the same time the Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered the league. The team has always been based in Washington but they have been shuffled back and forth by the league from the NFC West Division to AFC West in 1977 and back to NFC West before the 2002 season.

The fans have always played a big role in home games and collectively are known as the 12th man. Their enthusiastic response makes Qwest Field one of the loudest anywhere around the league and a place for visiting teams to dread. In honor of their undying support, team officials decided to retire jersey number 12 in honor of their fans before a player ever received the honor. Excessive crowd noise during a game with the New York Giants in 2005 forced the visiting team to be penalized 11 times for false starts. The team rewarded the crowd by presenting them with the game ball.

Qwest Field TicketsQwest Field is located south of Pioneer Square and seats 67,000. The roof covers most of its seating area and its first row seats are just 52 feet from the sidelines. End zone seats are even closer at 40 feet away from the field.

Jim Zorn put his name in the record books as the first starting quarterback for the team. His first pass for a touchdown came in the inaugural game when he connected with Sam McCullum for 15 yards in a losing effort against the St. Louis Cardinals. His longest touchdown pass came in 1977 and was hauled in by David Sims for 82 yards.

Legendary running back Franco Harris played the majority of his career in Pittsburgh but finished it in Washington State. Harris went on to become the first Seahawk to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the 1990 class.

In 1989, six years before he became a Hall of Fame inductee, wide receiver Steve Largent was the first player to join the Ring of Honor. After he retired, Largent pursued a career in politics and served in Washington D. C. from 1994 to 2002 as a Representative for Oklahoma.
