SoMo, aka Joseph Somers-Morales came from a musical family, yet stayed away from it at a young age. His father was a member of the jazz rock band Duck Soup and wasn’t always around for him, his brother and their mother. Throughout high school he wanted to do normal kid things like play football and hang out with friends.
In 2009, his mother bought him a piano for Christmas and he taught himself to play by ear, recording a cover of Chris Brown’s “Crawl”. On a whim he decided to upload the song to You Tube and it soon went viral. With the encouragement of his brother John, SoMo teamed up with a producer and continued to remake covers periodically over the next year. Prior to the release of Drake’s “Take Care” in 2011, he recorded a medley of the entire album and dropped it on the album’s release day, garnering over four million views.
Throughout 2012, the young singer and songwriter began to hone in on his style and create original music. He released “My Life” for free; a collection of songs showcasing his songwriting ability with a mix of R&B and pop soul. Without radio support and no label at that time, the hit track “Ride” began selling more than 10,000 digital tracks weekly while the music video accumulated over three million views.
As “Ride” gained steam. SoMo hit the road for a sold out tour, landing him a record deal with Republic Records in 2013. A self titled album followed in 2014 and this superstar has no intention of slowing down.
Fans of his intimate, infectious music will want to grab SoMo tickets and see this young passionate performer live when he comes to a city near you.
