The St Louis Cardinals Are The Pride Of Missouri Originally known as the Brown Stockings, the St Louis Cardinals were part of the American Association until it disbanded in 1882. They became part of the National League in 1892. The organization was known as the Perfectos during the 1899 season and one year later the owners changed the name to the Cardinals. The 1926 season marked the team's first appearance in the World Series. Rogers Hornsby led the team to the title in his second season serving as player/manager. Team members were 83 for 83 in stolen bases and led the league with 90 home runs. New Sportsman Park, also known as Robison Field, was home for the team from 1893 until 1920 when the club returned to their old stomping grounds at the original Sportsman Park. They played there until 1966 when Busch Memorial Stadium opened downtown. The new Busch Stadium was erected just to the south and partially on top of the downtown site and opened up in 2006. The new home field advantage paid off as the players went on to take the championship in five games from the Detroit Tigers. St Louis Cardinals fans are known for their loyalty. The first time home attendance topped one million guests was in 1946. In 1987, they led the league in attendance and became just the third organization to surpass the three million fan mark. They continue to draw more than three million fans every season with approximately one-third of them traveling from outside Missouri.
A bronze statue of Stan "The Man" Musial stands outside Gate 3 and is one of several such tributes to former players. Musial holds a spot among the greatest hitters in the history of professional baseball. His 22-year career yielded 475 home runs and he was honored with a Hall of Fame berth in 1969 on the first ballot. He went on hiatus from baseball in 1945 to serve one year in the United State Navy.
