The St Louis Rams Find A Home In The Heartland Of America

The St Louis Rams have moved twice over the course of their history. They entered the league as the Cleveland Rams in 1936 and relocated to Los Angeles after a decade in Ohio. They remained there until 1995 when they took up residence in the Missouri.

The organization set a fashion trend in 1948 when the ram horn logo was painted onto their leather helmets. It marked the first time a professional football team in America put a logo on a helmet.

The team created the Special Teams Coach position when they hired Dick Vermeil in 1969. He served as head coach for the organization for three seasons from 1997 to 1999. Vermeil is the only person to be named Coach of the Year while coaching high school, junior college, NCAA Division I and professional football.

Defensive end Deacon Jones recorded one of the most unusual stats for a player in his position when he completed an extra point attempt during his last season with the club. Jones was a member of the Fearsome Foursome, a defensive line that included Rosey Grier, Merlin Olsen and Lamar Lunday. He was traded to the San Diego Chargers in 1972 and entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980.

The players on offense between 1999 and 2001 had a nickname of their own. The Greatest Show on Turf referred to the attack oriented offensive game created by offensive coordinator Mike Martz. The potent offense utilized no less than five receivers and carried the team to a Super Bowl victory in 2000. They set a record for offensive yardage in 2000 by amassing 7,335 yards including a record 5,492 yards in passing.

The team plays home games at Edward Jones Dome located in the downtown area. The facility seats 66,000 and features a Magic Carpet Astro Turf system that takes three hours to set up for a football game. The carpet is stored in a pit underneath the concrete floor and is hauled into place using hydraulic winches.
