Stone Temple Pilots or STP as it is often abbreviated is an American rock band right out of San Diego, California. Current members consist of brothers Dean (guitar) & Robert DeLeo (bass, backing vocals), Eric Kretz (drums & percussion) and Chester Bennington (lead vocals) formerly lead vocals for Linkin Park. They released their debut album, Core (1992) with Scott Weiland and found immediate success. They went on to become one of the most commercially successful bands of the 90’s. Early releases had their genre as grunge, however due to a variety of releases that expressed a unique blend of psychedelic rock, bossa nova and classic rock the band evolved through several tumultuous periods of growth and commercial highs and lows, to become even greater than any of them ever thought possible. The band found a renewed vocalist in Bennington and have continued to improve on what was already great. The band finished a small tour late last year with Filter as the opening act. The tour featured new material along with live rarities such as the never before played live version of “Church On Tuesday” “Pop’s Love Suicide” and “Sex & Violence”. STP released the five-track EP titled High Rise in 2013, through Play Pen, LLC. Credited as Stone Temple Pilots with Chester Bennington. The single, “Black Heart” was released through iHeart Radio on September 18th, 2013.
The band insists that their blending of alternative rock from the 80’s and 90’s with the hard rock of the 70’s is a direct influence of the band Aerosmith. All of the band members are proud to have grown up Kiss fans during their childhood, and played shows at the Roseland Ballroom in 1993 dressed up in Kiss-style makeup. What is great is that each member pulls from their own set of musical geniuses to create a sound that is popular, while still sounding original and unique to them alone. The transformation of a band over time garners attention and fans who love to follow their progress or chart their success. Seeing a band stand the test of time is a true testimony to why music will forever endure and be a favorite among nearly every living creature on the planet because the people bringing it to us are true artists in their rawest form. Creating magic right before our very eyes.
