The Tampa Bay Buccaneers did make a big splash in the offseason by signing cornerback Darrell Revis to a long term extension. The coaching staff for the team remains largely unchanged, you want as much consistency as you can find as you go from year one to year two. The team had been struggling to find a reliable kicker following the retirement of Nate Kaeding, but with the signing of Rian Lindell they may have received the veteran presence at that position that they were looking.
Steve Smith was a big signing at wide receiver, only to find that he was ready to retire due to an injury as well. A defensive tackle like Andre Nesblitt that the team signed away from the Carolina Panthers may be able to give a certain amount of insight into the different schemes that the Panthers hope to use. It is always a good idea to make sure that you have some of the potential secrets of an NFC South rival. The fact that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed wide receiver Kevin Ogletree shows that everyone feels Ogletree has plenty of potential, but it is hard to say whether he has truly lived up to that potential in the NFL.
You also have to make a note of some of the departures on the roster as well. Dallas Clark signed with the Baltimore Ravens. Clark was a bit of a go to guy for quarterback Josh Freeman when Freeman was in a jam last season. Arelius Benn is now with the Philadelphia Eagles and Josh Freeman really began to develop a good rhythm with Benn as well in the passing game. Freeman should not necessarily be worried about a quarterback battle with Mike Glennon. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will sign a free agent if they want someone to come in and seriously compete with Freeman for the starting role.
William Gholston may be the player that the Buccanneers are expecting the most immediate production from out of the draft. They need to be able to get a bigger pass rush and the hope is that Gholston will be able to provide some of that. George Selvie was signed from the Jacksonville Jaguars to help on the defensive line as well. Given the moves that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made, it is hard to see them moving past the 7-9 mark that they had last season.
