Tampa Bay Rays Tickets

Fortunately, 2013 wasn't necessarily a disappointment for the Tampa Bay Rays. The organization amassed a 91-71 record and tied the Texas Rangers for the second wild card berth. Tampa Bay defeated Texas before losing in the American League Division Series to the Boston Red Sox in four games. With that in mind, the Rays are likely seeking another winning season along with some noticeable improvement. Perhaps no other club has had such a knack for baseball success.

Can the team perform even better in 2014, though? Most of last year's crew remains intact, including David Price, Evan Longoria, and others. Very few offseason moves have been made by Tampa Bay through this point. The organization acquired Ryan Hanigan and Heath Bell in a three-team trade. Otherwise, they re-signed some key players and are hoping for contributions from players that had down years in 2013. It remains to be seen whether the team has done enough.

Then again, the Tampa Bay Rays have been a dominant force in the American Tropicana Field TicketsLeague East. Their payroll is dwarfed by the Red Sox and New York Yankees, yet the team regularly finishes third place or better in the division. Joe Maddon has a knack for getting his players to perform like a payroll juggernaut. Without a doubt, such a phenomenon is a testament to the great environment in Tampa Bay rather than just luck.

In 2014, the Tampa Bay Rays might not perform as well as this past season. The Red Sox and Yankees have made some major improvements. A tougher division makes it less likely that the Rays will do better than third place. This organization has surprised baseball fans in the recent past, though. For that reason, nobody should count this club out because a 90-win season isn't that hard to imagine. Tampa Bay is always a wild card team to surprise, and 2014 should be no different.

The Tampa Bay Rays were added in the midst of the homerun race in the late 1990s. Of course the then-Devil Rays had been a longtime coming. The MLB had been trying to put a club in the Florida panhandle for a while. The area had been the site of spring training baseball for decades, so when the league looked to expand it seemed natural to put one of the next baseball teams there.

As much as the team was welcome, the club struggled, even though they arrived in the league in the era of free agency. Tampa Bay posted a losing record each of its first ten seasons. The baseball team had always been a little strapped for cash and consistently tried to a competitive roster from the farm system.

The clubs fortunes changed in 2008. The club did not change its strategy, but did change its name. Tampa Bay dropped the Devil and became the Rays. Fans and pundits joke that the name change altered the club’s momentum. In reality, the farm system had had enough years to develop and the front office had been shrewd enough to add high value/low cost players.

Tampa suddenly had one of the best starting pitching rotations in the MLB. Matt Garza, Scott Kazmir, James Shields, and Edwin Jackson were forces on the mound and began an incredible run that continues to this day. The Rays have yet to give their fans a losing season since that year and the club has even made the playoffs three times. The most successful campaign came that first year of the era, when the Rays won the AL East and played in their first World Series. Tampa Bay lost to Philadelphia and have to yet come back, but they have been a contender ever since.
