The Killers are an alternative rock band dominating the charts and selling out venues with the Killers tickets. This would not be noteworthy, except for the fact the group hails from Las Vegas, a city known for importing acts to entertain millions on the Strip rather than serving as the birthplace for a chart-topping, platinum-certified group that would be exported to thrill millions.
The band has returned from a hiatus, most notably featuring a solo effort by lead singer Brandon Flowers, and is ready to set out on a new world tour. This tour is in support for the latest album, Battle Born. This is the first new album in four years, which seems an eternity for the fans who have been awaiting the follow up recording to Day and Age. This newest album is named after the expression on the Nevada state flag and features Flowers as the lead singer, Dave Keuning as the lead guitarist, Mark Stoermer as the bass guitarist, and Ronnie Vannucci as the drummer. This is the same lineup that has existed since the group broke through on Hot Fuss.
Battle Born goes big, reviving the sort of big production and heartland rock that made Hot Fuss a triple-platinum success. This is not an album for those hoping for a song list easily translatable into an acoustic set. Flowers returns refreshed from the break and he appears able to fight the jaded vocal effort of a singer who has spent too much time on the road and in promotional interviews. The Killers instrumentation embraces big, glaring production value, as they should coming from a Strip illuminated by big neon lights. Not many alternative rock bands have the guts to try this kind of a record anymore, but the Killers do and they have produced an incredible success.
The song “Runaways” may be the lead single but the track “Flesh and Bone” is a true representation of an alt rock band comfortable with the infusion modern rock into the blue collar and heartland subgenre. The track will rekindle the feel of “Somebody Told Me” and Mr. Brightside”, the kind of music that began this incredible run from the Killers. Just as the guys did after the release of Hot Fuss and Sam’s Town, they will be engaging crowds around the globe on a tour named after the album.
