Tim McGraw And The Rise To Fame From Humble Beginnings
Tim McGraw is a huge country music star, but he did not have an easy beginning. Born Samuel Timothy McGraw on May 1, 1967 in Delhi, Louisiana, he believed his biological parents were raising him until, at the age of 11, he accidentally discovered his real father was professional baseball great Tug McGraw. With his trucker step-dad and mom, Betty Trimble, the sounds of country music filled his life.
Charley Pride and Johnny Paycheck helped inspired his love of music, which he shared in church and while performing in school plays. However, his skills on the little league field led him to Northwest Louisiana University where he considered the option of pursuing a professional baseball career. All this changed, however, in 1989 when his musical idol, Keith Whitely, died.
With this life-changing event, he checked out of school and headed for Music City in Nashville where he bought a guitar and began playing engagements in Printers Alley clubs. He had the voice and loved the music and, even after landing a contract with Cub Records in 1993, still remained a virtual unknown.
He didn't have to wait long for all this to change, however. It was after he began his live performances that audiences became receptive to country music's newest superstar. Selections included a special rendition of Steve Miller's "The Joker" and a 1994 single "Indian Outlaw", which was banned by many stations due to its
controversial lyrics.
The momentum from this point on continued to build. His 1994 "Not A Moment Too Soon" album followed by "All I Want" culminated in his 1996 Spontaneous Combustion Tour and marriage to Faith Hill later that same year. He finally reached the multi-platinum seller level in 1999 with the release of "A Place in the Sun" which included a number one single "Please Remember Me".
Although Tim McGraw is one of the greatest country singers of all time which has resulted in many awards, he is a country legend that ensures his difficult past is only a starting point. He continues to be dedicated to fundraising for needy causes including his hometown little league team, the Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society, and individual community causes through free concerts. Personally, these are among the highest points of his career and allow him to support others who began, as he did, with challenges in life.
